This is a vintage Japanese incense burner crafted from bronze, designed in the form of a Kirin (麒麟), a mythical creature deeply revered in Japanese and East Asian cultures. From 1880s, it showcases exceptional craftsmanship and symbolic significance.

The head of the Kirin flips down, revealing the opening used for placing and burning incense. The elaborate detailing captures the majestic essence of the Kirin, with intricate features such as flowing manes, textured body, and pronounced antlers, all enhanced by the natural patina of the bronze.

The Kirin is a legendary creature in Japanese mythology, often likened to a unicorn or a dragon-horse hybrid. It is considered an omen of good fortune, peace, and prosperity. According to lore, the Kirin only appears during the reign of a wise and just ruler or in areas of purity and peace. The creature is often associated with divinity and symbolizes the blending of strength, gentleness, and balance. Its sacred presence makes it a fitting motif for incense burners, often used in ceremonial or spiritual practices.

This antique piece not only serves as a functional incense burner but also as a meaningful decorative artifact, embodying cultural and artistic heritage.
