Vintage Japanese Backpack Basket, Bamboo, Showa Era (SKU 25D-414-1)
Showa-era woven bamboo backpack basket with hand-braided fabric straps
This vintage Japanese bamboo basket, likely a traditional kago backpack carrier, showcases the honest beauty of rural Showa-era craft. Warmly patinated bamboo strips are tightly woven into a rounded rectangular body, reinforced with vertical ribs and a flat, sturdy base designed to rest securely on the ground.
The rim is bound with a distinctive yellow synthetic band in a criss-cross pattern, a practical post-war detail that adds a cheerful accent. On the reverse, two thick, hand-braided fabric straps in earthy browns and faded pinks recall years of use in the fields, making this a characterful piece for wabi-sabi display or light storage in a contemporary interior.
