Vintage Japanese Altar Fitting 6 1/2" Wide Kyozukue Table, 1940s, Showa Era (SKU 25D-453-9)
Showa-era kurodame altar stand with gilt and vermilion carved detail
This compact butsudan altar table is finished in deep black lacquer, its softly rounded top resting above a richly decorated frieze. Vermilion-red openwork carving evokes stylised foliage bound by ribbed gilt columns, while fine gold maki-e style scrolls accent the edges and apron, lending the piece a refined temple presence.
Raised on four curling gilt feet with cloud-like skirts, the stand was designed to elevate a small Buddhist image, okimono, or incense burner, and now serves equally well as a display riser in a tokonoma or on a modern shelf. The combination of glossy black urushi-style finish, warm gold, and red carving captures the opulent aesthetic of mid-Showa devotional furnishings.
