Vintage Japanese Buddhist Writing Desk (Butsudan Table), Taisho Era, 1920s (SKU 25S-525)

A refined piece of spiritual craftsmanship, this vintage Japanese Buddhist desk from the Taisho era (1920s) was traditionally used by monks and practitioners for reading, writing, and sutra study. The desk’s elevated form and curved legs give it a graceful architectural presence, while the black lacquer finish with gold detailing reflects the solemn beauty of Buddhist aesthetics.

The front features two decorative pull-out drawers, originally designed for storing sutras, brushes, and writing implements. Beyond its practical function, this desk also served as a small altar table, where practitioners placed scriptures, incense, or offerings during daily rituals.

Elegant yet functional, this piece embodies the harmony of spiritual purpose and fine craftsmanship — a timeless example of Japan’s deep reverence for artistry and devotion.
