Vintage Japanese Hokkaido Ainu Bear (SKU 25D-331-6)
Hand-carved Hokkaido kuma wood sculpture in classic Ainu folk-art style
This vintage Japanese Ainu bear, or kibori kuma, is boldly carved in a prowling stance, capturing the power and movement of the Hokkaido brown bear. Deep, rhythmic chisel marks create a faceted coat that catches the light, while the head is finished with a warmer brown stain, giving subtle contrast and presence to the face.
Typical of Showa-era folk carving, the piece balances rustic texture with expressive detail, including an open mouth and carefully shaped paws. Richly stained and polished, it makes an atmospheric accent for a tansu top, tokonoma alcove, or any space that appreciates traditional Ainu craftsmanship and vintage Japanese decor.
