Vintage Japanese Ainu Bear (SKU 25D-331-5)
Hand-carved Hokkaido kuma with salmon, a classic expression of Ainu folk art
This vintage wooden okimono captures the powerful stance of a standing Hokkaido bear, or kuma, its jaws open in a dynamic roar. Carved in the traditional Ainu style, the surface is worked in bold, faceted cuts that suggest thick fur, while the darker stain on the body contrasts beautifully with the lighter, warm-toned salmon slung over its shoulder.
Typical of mid–Showa era souvenir carvings from Hokkaido, this piece rests on a chiseled base that evokes rocky terrain and flowing water. The folk-art character, expressive movement, and pleasing patina make it a distinctive addition to any collection of Japanese Ainu bear carvings or rustic mountain décor.
