Vintage Japanese Ainu Bear (SKU 25D-331-4)

Powerful hand-carved Ainu kuma (bear) sculpture in a dynamic climbing pose

This vintage Japanese Ainu bear carving captures the raw strength and movement of a wild kuma as it clambers up a stylized rocky outcrop. Hewn with bold, faceted chisel marks, the dark-stained bear contrasts beautifully with the warm, natural tones of the base, emphasizing both form and texture in classic Hokkaidō folk-art style.

The open mouth, sharply cut claws, and deeply textured fur give this piece a striking sculptural presence from every angle. A fine example of mid-Showa era Ainu wood carving, it makes an evocative focal point for an alcove, shelf, or curated collection of Japanese folk art and mingei objects.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
