This vintage Japanese Ainu bear (kuma) captures the gentle, seated pose beloved in Hokkaido folk carving. Worked from a single block of wood, the sculptor has contrasted softly rounded forms with crisp chisel marks around the muzzle, claws, and fur, giving the piece both warmth and character.
