Vintage Japanese Hokkaido Ainu Bear, Showa Era (SKU 25D-331-10)

Hand-carved Hokkaido-style kuma with salmon, a classic vintage Ainu bear sculpture.

This expressive vintage Japanese Ainu bear, or kibori kuma, is carved in the iconic pose of a brown bear walking with a salmon firmly clasped in its jaws. Deeply cut fur lines, a carefully modeled snout, and the contrast between the darker head and lighter body showcase the folk-art charm typical of mid-Showa Hokkaido workshop pieces.

The salmon is rendered with crisp scales and fins, balancing power and movement in a compact, display-friendly form. With its warm honey-brown stain and subtle hand-burnished highlights, this Ainu bear makes an inviting accent for a Japanese, cabin, or wabi-sabi interior, and a characterful addition to any collection of Showa-era wood carvings.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
