Vintage Japanese Hokkaido Ainu Bear (SKU 25D-331-1)

Hand-carved Hokkaido-style bear (kimun kamuy) grasping a salmon in classic Ainu folk-art tradition.

This vintage wooden bear, or inu-kuma, is carved in the bold, faceted style associated with mid-Showa Ainu workshops. The artisan has given the animal a powerful stance, its head lowered as it bites into a salmon, a motif symbolizing abundance and respect for nature in northern Japan. Deeply cut fur lines catch the light, giving the compact figure an energetic, almost sculptural presence.

Traces of warm wood tone on the salmon contrast with the darker stained body, emphasizing the catch and adding visual depth. Displayed on a shelf, tokonoma, or desk, this Ainu bear makes an evocative accent for any Japanese folk art or Mingei collection, while its modest size keeps it easy to place in a modern interior.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
