Showa-era bamboo and wood folding byobu with carved wave and seasonal motifs
This vintage Japanese four-panel screen divider combines the lightness of sudare (bamboo blinds) with the sculptural presence of carved wood. Slender bamboo slats are tightly strung in horizontal bands, creating a warm, translucent surface that softens light while preserving a sense of openness between spaces.
Across the midsection runs a continuous openwork frieze of stylized waves, evoking traditional seigaiha and coastal scenery, while the lower panels feature carved deer and pine silhouettes framed by vertical bamboo rods. Sturdy wooden frames with gently undulating top rails and metal hinges allow the piece to fold easily, making it an elegant, functional room divider for a tatami room, entryway, or contemporary interior seeking authentic Showa-period character.
