This is a vintage Japanese book box (book cae) called Hon Bako from Taisho period (1910's-1920's).

This tansu is made entirely of Paulownia (Kirinoki) wood

Originally used to store books, this small chest would make a nice side table as well as a storage unit for any desktop.
