A finely cast Japanese bronze sculpture depicting a Karajishi (唐獅子)—the mythical “Chinese lion” long revered as a guardian figure symbolizing strength, protection, and prosperity. The lion is modeled in a dynamic, powerful stance with exaggerated musculature, a flowing mane, and a tightly curled tail, all hallmarks of traditional karajishi iconography.
The surface shows a naturally developed verdigris patina, with subtle variations in green and brown tones that emphasize the depth of the casting and age of the piece. The expressive face and robust legs convey both vigilance and vitality.
The sculpture is accompanied by its original wooden storage box, inscribed 唐獅子 (Karajishi), confirming the subject and intended identification. Such bronze karajishi were often displayed in alcoves (tokonoma) or near entrances as auspicious objects believed to ward off evil and invite good fortune.
A strong decorative and symbolic work, suitable for collectors of Japanese bronzes or as a sculptural accent with historical presence.
