This is an authentic Japanese Hakone puzzle storage box called Kobako from mid.1900's.

It was hand crafted using the famous marquetry technique called Yosegi. This craft originated in the hotspring resort town of Hakone, Japan during the Edo period and it was eventually designated a Japanese traditional craft by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

The painstaking technique used to create the marquetry geometric pattern starts by selecting solid blocks of elongated wood of differing colors then cutting and using glue to bundle them into a large solid wood block.  It is required some steps to open this box whic makes this box so treasured, valued and interesting!

This fine piece will be great to add to your collection.
