Antique Japanese Kagami Hand Mirror, Bronze, Meiji Era (SKU 25D-477-1)

Meiji-era bronze kagami with crane and pine auspicious motif

This antique Japanese bronze mirror, or kagami, features a beautifully cast back decorated with a central floral crest framed by finely textured ground. Around the rim, elegant cranes in flight and a gnarled pine tree are rendered in low relief, classic symbols of longevity and good fortune in Japanese art. The mirror surface has aged to a warm, mottled patina, speaking to its many decades of quiet use.

Dating to the late Meiji period, this hand mirror would originally have been used on a cosmetic stand in a traditional nihonma interior. Today it displays wonderfully as a wall piece, on a stand, or laid flat in a tokonoma, where the rich bronze tones and time-softened details can be appreciated. A characterful example for collectors of Japanese antiques, metalwork, or Meiji-era décor.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
