Antique Japanese Fish, Wood, 1920s (SKU 25D-365)
This carved wooden carp features a bold red lacquered finish with black undertones accentuating the scales and fins. Originally part of a jizai okimono (articulated sculpture), it reflects the tradition of lifelike animal forms that symbolized vitality and movement. The expressive head, deeply carved scales, and dynamic tail show skilled handwork and an emphasis on realism.
In Japanese culture, the carp (koi) represents perseverance, strength, and good fortune, famously associated with the legend of the carp leaping the waterfall to become a dragon. As a standalone object, this piece functions as a striking sculptural accent, retaining the character and spirit of its original jizai form.
