Antique Japanese Hanaike Flower Vase/Okimono (SKU 25D-182-1)

Taishō-era bronze bud vase in the playful form of a nasu (eggplant)

This charming small vase is cast as a standing eggplant, a beloved motif in Japanese art symbolizing good fortune and auspicious beginnings. Worked in dark patinated metal with a soft sheen, the piece captures the natural curves and subtle irregularities of the vegetable, from the swelling body to the gently twisting stem that opens to form the mouth of the vase.

Likely produced in the Taishō period, it reflects the era’s taste for whimsical yet refined okimono and bud vases suitable for a tokonoma alcove or desk display. The compact size makes it ideal for a single seasonal sprig or as a sculptural object on its own, adding a quiet touch of Japanese wabi-sabi to any interior.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
