Antique Japanese Mizusashi For Tea Ceremony / Storage Vase (SKU 25D-181-2)
Rustic Taishō-period glazed storage vase with hand-painted landscape and fitted lid
This characterful antique Japanese vase is a robust, wheel-thrown jar with twin loop handles and an unusually sculpted mouth, finished in a thick, glassy glaze. Deep green splashes cascade over a warm ivory ground, where a freehand sansui (mountain-and-water) landscape unfolds in iron-brown brushwork, evoking rural farmhouses, trees, and distant hills. The surface shows an attractive all-over crackle (kan-nyū) that has mellowed with age, enhancing its wabi-sabi appeal.
Complete with its original, simply formed ceramic lid pierced at the center, the piece recalls early 20th-century utilitarian storage jars adapted over time as decorative flower containers. The rippled body, bold green drips, and impressed potter’s seal to the base speak to a folk-kiln origin, making this an ideal focal point for an interior that appreciates Taishō-era craft, mingei pottery, and organic Japanese design.
