Antique Japanese Vase (SKU 25D-156-1)

Taishō-era bronze vase with finely modeled lobsters in high relief

This compact, globular bronze vase captures the refined metalwork of early 20th-century Japan. Against a deep brown patina, two lobsters (ebi) emerge in crisp high relief, their antennae and segmented shells flowing organically around the shoulder of the vessel. The understated, rounded form and narrow neck provide a calm stage for the lively sea creatures, balancing movement with quiet, sculptural presence.

In Japanese art, the lobster is a traditional symbol of longevity and celebration, often associated with auspicious New Year offerings. This Taishō-era piece would have served as an elegant flower vase (hanaire) or display object in a tokonoma alcove, its dark, even patina and concentric bands near the foot adding subtle visual texture that complements both modern and classic interiors.

  • Origin: Japan
  • Era: Taishō period (early 20th century)
  • Material: Cast bronze with dark brown patina
  • Use: Flower vase (hanaire) or decorative display piece

  • Dimensions: 6 1/2"Diameter x 6"H
  • Condition: Excellent; minor surface wear and small patina marks consistent with age

A characterful Taishō bronze that brings the auspicious charm of the sea to any curated Japanese or Art Deco-inspired setting.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
