Antique Japanese Two Section Mizuya Kitchen Tansu Chest With Hikido Sliding Doors And Multi Sized Warabite Drawers (SKU 25D-E401)

Handsome Taishō-era mizuya tansu with hikido sliding doors, carved ranma panels, and multi-sized warabite drawers for refined kitchen or living storage.

This classic two-section Japanese mizuya tansu was originally crafted for the daidokoro (kitchen), where it stored tableware, utensils, and precious dry goods. The upper case features figured wood sliding doors, followed by a band of carved panels and a row of small drawers, while the lower case offers broad hikido doors and generously sized drawers, all framed in warm, honey-toned timber that showcases the natural grain.

Traditional iron warabite-style pulls, mortise-and-tenon joinery, and the balanced rhythm of doors and drawers give this tansu a quiet architectural presence. The two-part construction allows for easier transport and flexible installation, making it ideal as a kitchen sideboard, dining-room cabinet, or statement storage in a contemporary interior seeking authentic Japanese character.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
