Antique Japanese Two Section Kimono Tansu Chest With Distinctive Kanagu Hardware On Kannon And Katabiraki Door Two Kakute Pull Drawers (SKU 25D-B013)

Fine two-section kimono tansu with bold iron kanagu and traditional Kannon biraki / katabiraki door configuration.

This antique Japanese kimono tansu showcases beautifully grained sugi wood framed by striking hand-forged iron kanagu. The central lockplate forms a powerful circular motif, its scalloped lobes and delicate nail heads emphasizing the symmetry of the Kannon biraki double doors. A working key and chain hang from the lock, underscoring the chest’s original function as a secure storehouse for treasured kimono and obi.

Designed as a practical two-section chest, the piece combines elegant katabiraki doors with lower drawers fitted with classic kakute-style pulls. The warm, honey-toned surface contrasts with the deep black ironwork, creating a timeless presence suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors. Whether used as a clothing chest, hallway storage, or a focal display piece, this tansu brings authentic Meiji-period character into the home.

A refined example of Japanese kimono tansu craftsmanship, ready to serve as a functional heirloom centerpiece in today’s interiors.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
