Handsome two-section kimono tansu with richly worked kanagu ironwork and five multi-sized drawers for elegant, practical storage.

This classic Japanese isho dansu (kimono tansu) is crafted as a two-section chest for ease of transport and flexible placement in the home. Warm, honey-toned wood boards are joined with clean, rectilinear lines, allowing the dark iron kanagu to stand out in bold contrast across the façade, corners, and side handles. The upper bank of wide drawers is ideal for folded garments or textiles, while the lower section combines a long drawer with smaller drawers to organize accessories and personal items.

The decorative kanagu hardware is a highlight of this piece, featuring pierced and scalloped plates, warabite-style drawer pulls, and elaborate lock escutcheons with raised bosses and a central keyhole to the main drawers. Side-mounted carry handles and sectional construction reflect its original use in a traditional Japanese townhouse, where such a kimono tansu would have stored clothing while also serving as a focal point of the interior.
