Antique Japanese Tow Section Mizuya Tansu Kitchen Chest With Hikido Sliding Doors And Multi Sized Warabite Pull Drawers, 1920s, Taisho Era (SKU 25D-E001)

Two-section Taisho-era mizuya tansu with hikido sliding doors and multi-sized warabite-pull drawers for refined kitchen or living storage.

This handsome antique mizuya tansu is crafted in two stackable sections, a practical design that allowed it to be moved easily through traditional Japanese machiya townhouses. The warm, honey-toned wood showcases a beautiful grain, framed by clean, rectilinear lines that speak to early 20th-century taste. The upper case features wide hikido (sliding doors) opening to generous shelves, ideal for displaying ceramics, glassware, or treasured objects.

Below, an impressive array of multi-sized drawers with classic warabite (fern-shoot) iron pulls surrounds a pair of lower sliding doors accented by delicate kiri-style cut-out motifs. The combination of open compartments, sliding doors, and small drawers reflects the original role of the mizuya tansu as the organizing heart of the Japanese kitchen, while making this piece exceptionally functional today for dining rooms, living spaces, or as a statement storage cabinet.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
