Antique Japanese Imari Jubako Tiered Food Box (SKU 25D-393)

Hand-painted Imari porcelain jubako with vivid iron-red and cobalt decoration

This antique Japanese tiered food box, or jubako, is crafted in finely potted porcelain and richly painted in a classic Imari palette of iron-red, deep cobalt blue, soft green and gilt accents. Three stacking tiers are crowned by a matching lid with an elegant integral handle, creating a striking vertical form designed for presenting celebratory dishes at New Year and other festive gatherings.

Each tier is encircled with alternating floral roundels and stylised foliage panels, framed by geometric borders that echo Taishō-period tastes for bold, graphic pattern. The surface retains a pleasing gloss, and the hand-brushed lines and slight variations in the enamels speak to its artisanal production. Beautiful displayed as an objet d’art, this vintage Imari jubako also offers practical storage for sweets, tea packets or small treasures.

  • Origin: Japan, likely Arita / Imari ware
  • Era: Taishō period (early 20th century)
  • Material: Glazed porcelain with overglaze enamels

  • Condition: Excellent, with light age-appropriate wear to enamels

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
