Antique Japanese Tiered Food Box (SKU 25D-268-1)

Taishō-era five-tier jubako with speckled red-brown urushi lacquer and original signed storage case

This handsome antique Japanese tiered food box, or jubako, dates to the Taishō period and is housed in its original wooden tomobako storage case, boldly brushed with red characters. The five stacking layers are finished in a richly mottled red-brown lacquer, creating a subtle all-over pattern that catches the light while remaining understated and elegant.

Inside, each tier is coated in a warm vermilion urushi, a traditional choice for serving celebratory dishes at New Year and other festive gatherings. Whether displayed as an object of art, used as a functional bento-style box, or incorporated into a wabi-sabi interior, this Taishō jubako offers an authentic touch of early 20th-century Japanese dining culture.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
