Antique Japanese Three Section Kimono Tansu Chest With Hikido Katabiraki Door And Multi Sized Drawers, 1910s (SKU 25D-A430)

Showa-era three-section kimono tansu with hikidō sliding doors, katabiraki cupboard and richly detailed iron hardware.

This handsome three-section kimono tansu exemplifies early 20th-century Japanese cabinetry, combining refined sugi (cedar) grain with practical, well-balanced storage. The upper section features a classic arrangement of hikidō sliding doors and a right-hand katabiraki hinged door, opening to shelved compartments ideal for folded kimono, obi, or modern textiles, while the middle tier offers small drawers for accessories and valuables secured by a working lock and key.

Below, a bank of graduated, multi-sized drawers provides generous, easily accessible storage, each fitted with pierced iron warabite-style pulls decorated with floral motifs that soften the tansu’s clean architectural lines. Forged corner plates and side carrying handles speak to its original modular construction, allowing the chest to be separated and moved, yet it presents today as a unified, warm-toned statement piece that integrates seamlessly into contemporary interiors.

A refined Showa kimono tansu that brings authentic Japanese craftsmanship, warmth, and highly functional storage to any space.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
