Powerful red-lacquered tengu mask, carved for shrine or festival display

This boldly carved antique Japanese tengu mask captures the fierce, protective spirit of the mountain deity with a dramatically exaggerated nose, bulging eyes, and deeply modeled brows. Finished in a rich vermilion and black lacquer, the sculpted planes of the face catch the light beautifully, giving the mask a commanding presence whether hung on a wall or displayed on a stand.

Hand-carved from a single block of wood, the mask shows honest age in the patina and wear to the pigments, especially around the nose and eyes, enhancing its character as an authentic piece of Japanese folk art. The reverse reveals careful gouge work and an old metal hanging loop, indicating that it likely served in shrine or festival use rather than as a modern souvenir.
