Antique Japanese Maru Bon Tea Tray, Showa Era (SKU 25D-199-3)

Showa-era maru-bon tea tray with rich, timeworn patina for everyday chanoyu or display.

This round wooden tea tray, or maru-bon, exemplifies the understated elegance of mid-20th century Japanese tableware. The surface reveals flowing wood grain enhanced by a warm brown stain, deepened over decades of use to a soft, semi-gloss sheen. A gently raised rim frames the tray and provides a practical edge for carrying cups and small dishes during casual tea service.

Likely made for everyday use in a Showa-period household, this vintage Japanese tray now reads as a quietly sophisticated accent piece. The darker area of wear and subtle marks on the surface speak to its history without compromising function, making it ideal for serving sencha, presenting sweets, or styling as a base for a small ikebana arrangement or incense set.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
