This is an antique Japanese tall lacquered Ko Tansu, small chest from Middle Meiji period (1880's-1890's). It is very practical to have tall size.  It was a tansu maker's commissioned piece requested by the previous owner.

The iron hardware was hand made and Urushi lacquer was used for the finish. The Kamon, family crest is Kashiwa,Oak leaves. Oak leaves have been used as offerings to gods so it is a sacred tree, also it has meaning of prosperity.

The drawer fronts were made using Paulownia (kirinoki) wood and the case and drawer backs were made using Cryptomeria (Suginoki) wood.
