This remarkable Japanese stone Buddha sculpture dates back to the year 1717 (Kyōhō 2), during the mid-Edo period, offering over 300 years of sacred history. Hand-carved from solid natural stone, the figure is deeply recessed in an arch-topped stele form (tō) and represents a seated Buddha, likely Amida Nyorai or Jizō Bosatsu, based on the posture and stylized robe contours.
The statue is weathered with age, its surface textured with centuries of natural erosion, moss, and patina—giving it an earthy, spiritual authenticity. Despite the softened contours, the original form and meditative gesture remain powerfully present. The figure sits in a cross-legged lotus position, framed by a halo-like arch suggesting enlightenment or celestial presence.
The stone surface shows visible pitting, lichen growth, and mineral buildup, characteristics consistent with long-term outdoor placement, likely in a rural wayside shrine (道祖神) or cemetery setting.
