This is an authentic antique Japanese lacquered stacking stair chest called Kaidan Tansu from middle Meiji (1880's-1890's).  It was constructed with Zelkova wood (Japanese Keyaki), Cypress wood (Hinoki) and Cryptomeria wood (Suginoki).

This step chest is not only functional as stairs but  it was great storage with very limited space use. This chest can add charm and functionality to any area of the house.  You can store large items in the bottom compartment or display artwork and sculptures for an enchanting effect.

The antique Japanese stair tansu is becoming a very rare find these days indeed.
