Antique Japanese Lacquered Jubako Stacked Box (SKU 25D-036)

Taishō-period lacquered jubako with cranes, bamboo and plum in brilliant maki-e

This elegant antique Japanese stacked box, or jubako, is finished in deep black lacquer and lavish gold maki-e, depicting cranes flying among bamboo and blossoming plum. The design wraps seamlessly around the tiers, creating a continuous landscape that symbolizes longevity, resilience and renewal—classic auspicious motifs in Japanese decorative arts.

The interior of each tier is coated in rich vermilion lacquer, offering a striking contrast to the glossy black exterior. Likely produced in the Taishō era, this multi-tiered food box would have been used for celebratory meals such as New Year’s osechi ryōri, and today serves equally well as a display piece, refined storage, or a focal point in a Japanese-inspired interior.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
