Antique Japanese Small Tansu Chest Elaborate Hardware Round Lock Plates, Iron, Meiji Era (SKU 25D-G048)

Compact Meiji-era ko-tansu with richly worked round lock plates and original iron fittings

This handsome antique Japanese small tansu is composed of two stacking sections, each crafted in warm, dark-stained sugi (cedar) with a deep translucent lacquer that reveals the natural grain. Designed as a portable storage chest, it features side carrying handles and a practical arrangement of drawers and a locking door, ideal for valuables and everyday essentials.

The front is adorned with elaborate forged-iron hardware, including large round lock plates with floral engraving, scalloped drawer pulls, and decorative corner brackets that frame the case. The asymmetrical upper section with its hinged door and intricate strapwork evokes classic merchant tansu (choba-dansu) styling, making this piece a striking yet versatile accent for an entry, living room, or bedside.

  • Origin: Japan, likely a regional merchant’s ko-tansu
  • Era: Meiji period, early 20th century
  • Material: Sugi (cedar) with lacquer finish; hand-forged iron hardware
  • Use: Originally a small merchant tansu for documents and valuables; now ideal as a side chest, nightstand, or entry storage
  • Features: Two-piece stacking construction; elaborate iron hardware with round lock plates; multiple drawers and locking door; side carrying handles; rich dark patina
  • Dimensions: 22"W x 17 5/8"D x 38:H
  • Condition: Excellent vintage condition with age-appropriate wear and patina to wood and metal

A refined example of Meiji craftsmanship, this small tansu brings authentic Japanese character and practical storage to any interior.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
