Antique Japanese Small Drawer, 1910s (SKU 25D-198-2)

Compact Taishō-era kodansu with rich red-brown patina and iron hardware

This charming small chest, or kodansu, dates to Japan’s early 20th century and features a warm, lacquered red-brown finish that has mellowed beautifully with age. Two slim upper drawers with round ring pulls sit above a deep lower compartment secured by an iron lock plate and bail handle, recalling the practical elegance of merchant tansu used for documents and personal effects.

The piece is constructed in solid softwood with a stained front and sides, leaving the interiors and drawer backs in natural wood for a pleasing contrast. Wear to the lacquer, oxidized hardware, and ink-like marks inside the drawers all speak to long service while adding authentic wabi-sabi character. Ideal as a tabletop storage chest, bedside piece, or focal accent in a Japanese-inspired interior.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
