Antique Japanese Small Drawer (SKU 25D-158-2)

Taishō-era ko-bako with lift-top compartment, maker’s mark, and warm aged patina

This compact Japanese small drawer chest was crafted as a personal ko-bako, a portable box for storing writing tools, seals, or treasured keepsakes. The rich, reddish-brown grain of the hardwood case is accented by hand-forged iron fittings, including a scalloped front plate and a low, arched carry handle that speaks to its original role as an everyday companion piece.

A single front drawer with turned wooden pull is paired with a hinged top that opens to reveal a shallow interior compartment. Inside the drawer, a crisp maker’s stamp in kanji adds character and provenance, while the softly worn interior surfaces and traces of old use create the kind of authentic patina prized in wabi-sabi interiors. Perfect on a desk, tansu, or tokonoma shelf, this Taishō-era box offers both storage and sculptural presence.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
