Antique Japanese Small Chest — Ornate Ironwork, 1880s, Meiji Era (SKU: 25M-G320)

This Meiji-era ko-tansu, crafted from lightweight yet durable kiri (paulownia) wood, dazzles with chrysanthemum lock plates and lavish corner brackets, each petal and scroll forged by hand. Such embellishment indicated status—perhaps made for a prosperous merchant wishing to blend utility with flourish.

Each lock plate is further adorned with finely detailed engravings of cranes, turtles, pine, sakura, and plum blossoms—classic Japanese motifs symbolizing longevity, resilience, and seasonal beauty. These intricate elements elevate the chest beyond function, making it a true collector’s piece.

Compact in size, it's ideal for a tokonoma alcove or tabletop display, offering elegant storage for letters, calligraphy tools, or tea implements. A side lockbox, once used for coins or seals, still clicks shut with satisfying precision, ready to safeguard modern keepsakes.
