Antique Japanese Shop Signboard (Kanban) — Hand-Painted Cedar, 1900s, Meiji Era (SKU: 25M-377)

Crimson characters and blooming camellias calling patrons home

Vibrant blocks of vermilion, jade, and celadon leap from this rare Meiji-era kanban—a storefront sign that once drew thirsty travelers to a sake brewery or condiment shop. Centered on the board is the bold gold kanji 「丸重」(Marujū), complemented by hand-brushed script listing the brewery’s accolades and poetic references to Aichi’s famed waters.

Floral motifs of plum blossom and swirling seigaiha waves celebrate prosperity and purity, while raised gesso lettering shimmers under light. Hung in a modern kitchen, bar, or gallery, it transforms the wall into a dialogue between commerce and craft, past and present.
