This is a vintage traditional Japanese shoe chest called Geta Bako from early Showa period (1940's). It was constructed using Cypress (Hinoki) and Cryptomeria (Suginoki) woods.

These chests would be found at the house entrance called Genkan where guests and residents would take off their shoes to store them before entering a home. The tall narrow door to the right of the chest housed the umbrella.
