Antique Japanese Sewing Box, Wood (SKU 25S-493)

Mid 20th-century Japanese wooden hari-bako sewing chest with figured veneer and multiple drawers

This compact antique Japanese sewing box, or itomaki-bako, is crafted in warm honey-toned wood with a striking burl-like veneer to the drawer fronts and lid. The simple rectilinear form is softened by gently rounded top edges, while slender metal pulls add a subtle modern accent typical of early 20th-century domestic design.

The hinged top opens to reveal a divided tray for threads and small tools, and the façade presents four smoothly sliding drawers of varying sizes, ideal for storing needles, thimbles, scissors, and other notions. Both practical and decorative, this sewing chest works beautifully today as a jewelry box, desk organizer, or small tansu-style accent in any interior.
