Antique Japanese Haribako Sewing Box, 1920s (SKU 25D-458-1-1)

Taishō-era wooden itomaki-bako with graceful metal fittings and portable handle.

This charming antique Japanese sewing box, or itomaki-bako, is crafted in warm-toned hardwood with a beautifully figured grain to the drawer fronts. The compact chest-style form offers two small upper drawers over three deeper drawers, originally designed to organize threads, needles, thimbles and other sewing notions in a kimono-making household.

Iron pulls with subtle decorative backplates, traditional joinery at the corners and a sturdy top carry handle give this piece the quiet presence of Taishō-period tansu furniture. A lovely addition for collectors of Japanese antiques, it also works perfectly today as a desktop organizer, jewelry chest or small storage cabinet, bringing a touch of vintage atelier character to any interior.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
