Antique Japanese Sewing Box (SKU 25D-396-1)

Taishō-era kiri sewing tansu with richly figured grain and ingenious hidden storage.

This compact Japanese sewing box, or haribako, dates to the Taishō period and is crafted in the manner of a small tansu chest. The front is finished with a dramatic, swirling grain pattern often prized in antique cabinetry, giving the piece an elegant, almost moiré surface that glows in warm brown tones. Two larger drawers with iron warabite-style pulls anchor the design, balanced by a pair of smaller drawers, one fitted with a simple round knob.

Beneath the sliding top lid is a divided compartment for threads, needles, and small tools, complete with a removable inner cover. The interior shows the lighter natural wood, providing a pleasing contrast to the darker stained exterior. With its practical layout and quietly refined presence, this Taisho era sewing box works beautifully today as a desktop organizer, jewelry chest, or accent storage on a shelf or sideboard.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
