Antique Japanese Sewing Box (SKU 25D-387)

Elegant black lacquer haribako with stepped interior drawers

This antique Japanese sewing box, or haribako, is finished in a deep black lacquer that gives it a refined, almost mirror-like surface. The compact chest features a clean, rectilinear silhouette accented by simple metal pulls, embodying the understated sophistication associated with early 20th-century Japanese design.

Opening the hinged top reveals a cleverly tiered interior with multiple compartments and sliding drawers, originally intended to organize threads, needles, and small sewing tools. Today it serves equally well as a jewellery or keepsake chest, bringing Taishō-era charm and practical storage to a desk, vanity, or entry console.

  • Origin: Japan
  • Era: Taishō period (early 20th century)
  • Material: Wood with black lacquer finish and metal hardware
  • Use: Traditional sewing box (haribako); ideal now for jewellery, accessories, or desktop storage
  • Features: Stepped interior with multiple drawers and compartments; hinged lift-top section; small upper tray; original metal ring and bail handles; sleek black lacquer surface
  • Dimensions: 10 1/2"W x 6 1/2"D x 7 1/2"H
  • Condition: Very good vintage condition with light wear and small marks consistent with age and use

A versatile Taishō-era sewing chest that adds both storage and a quietly luxurious Japanese accent to any interior.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
