Antique Japanese Sewing Box (SKU 25D-383)

Taishō-era itomaki-bako with rich red lacquer and sliding worktop

This antique Japanese sewing box, or itomaki-bako, is finished in a deep translucent red lacquer that reveals the grain and age of the underlying wood. The compact chest form offers three graduated drawers and a smaller upper drawer, each fitted with simple iron warabite-style pulls that have mellowed to a soft patina over time.

The hinged top panel slides back to reveal an open compartment for sewing tools, thread, and notions, reflecting the thoughtful design of early 20th-century Japanese domestic furniture. Equally at home as a functional organizer on a desk or as a decorative tansu-style accent, this Taishō-era piece brings warmth, character, and authentic vintage charm to any interior.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
