Antique Japanese Sake Bottle — 1920s, Taisho Era
“Ōwada Funamoto Jōzō Moto” – A Legacy Sealed in Clay

This antique sake tokkuri from the Taisho period (1920s) carries the elegant inscription 大和田 舟本醸造元 (Ōwada Funamoto Jōzō Moto)—denoting the origin as a sake brewery called Funamoto located in Ōwada, Japan. The phrase 醸造元 (Jōzō Moto) translates to “brewing origin,” attesting to the bottle’s authentic use in transporting or serving locally crafted sake during an era that prized artisan techniques.

The vessel’s clean, ovoid form and classic narrow neck, along with a remnant of the original rope tie, speak to its utilitarian heritage. Yet, its glazed cream surface and bold black hand-brushed calligraphy make it as much a visual statement as a historical artifact.

Each kanji stroke retains the energy of the brush, grounding the bottle in a time when craftsmanship and regional identity mattered deeply.
