Antique Japanese Ranma, Wood, 1910s (SKU 24N-202-3)
Taishō-period ranma transom with scenic landscape carving
This antique Japanese ranma (欄間) panel showcases an elegantly carved landscape of rolling hills, arched bridge, temple architecture and stylised pine trees beneath a rising or setting sun. The warm natural grain of the wood is highlighted by a contrasting black lacquer frame, giving the piece a refined presence typical of early 20th-century interiors.
Originally installed above sliding doors in a traditional washitsu room to allow light and air to circulate, this Taishō-era ranma now makes a striking wall display. Its openwork composition casts delicate shadows, while the classic motifs of matsu pines and shrine-like buildings evoke good fortune and longevity, making it ideal for either Japanese-style or modern spaces.
