Antique Japanese Bronze Monk Tanuki With Bell (Mokugyo) Statue (SKU 25D-438)
Charming bronze tanuki in kimono, cradling a sake flask and staff
This finely cast antique Japanese statue depicts a standing tanuki (raccoon dog) in a flowing kimono, modeled with the quiet dignity of a temple attendant. The figure clasps a rounded sake flask to the chest while holding a slender staff, a playful nod to the tanuki’s association with good fortune, hospitality, and merriment in Japanese folklore.
Rich dark patination highlights the soft drape of the robes and the alert, open-mouthed expression, while the warm reddish-brown of the flask adds a subtle accent. Ideal as a tokonoma focal point or as a distinctive addition to a Japanese art collection, this tanuki okimono brings both whimsy and auspicious symbolism to any interior.
