Antique Japanese Merchant's Money Box – Circa 1880, Meiji Period
An authentic Meiji-period money box once used by a traveling merchant in late 19th-century Japan. Constructed from solid keyaki (zelkova) wood, this compact chest is fortified with heavy iron plating and hand-forged rivets (炮钉) for durability and theft protection. Coins were inserted through a slot on top; a fitted iron lid provides access to the interior. A hidden drawer at the base adds storage space for paper currency or valuables. Its aged patina and rugged construction speak to its practical use in an era before banks were common.
