Antique Japanese Mizuya Kitchen Tansu Chest With Large Hikido Sliding Door, Glass, 1920s (SKU 25D-E402)

Substantial Taishō-era mizuya tansu with impressive glass hikido doors and flexible open shelving.

This antique Japanese mizuya kitchen tansu features a wide façade framed in warm, dark-stained wood and a pair of large glass hikido (sliding doors). The multi-pane glass fronts showcase the contents while protecting them from dust, making the piece ideal for displaying tableware, sake sets, or curated collections. The clean lines, squared edges and restrained detailing reflect early 20th-century taste, bridging traditional craftsmanship with a more modern sensibility.

Inside, a series of adjustable shelves run the full width of the cabinet, supported by original ladder-style side runners for customizable storage. The solid plank sides and back, recessed hand pulls, and low platform base speak to its origin as a practical yet refined kitchen tansu. Today, this versatile chest can serve as a dining-room side cabinet, bookcase, or shop display, bringing authentic Japanese character and functional elegance to any interior.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
