Taishō Red-Lacquer Tri-Fold Kyōdai — Urushi & Carved Ranma, 1920s

A crimson stage for the art of adornment

Dressed in high-gloss vermilion urushi, this rare tri-fold mirror transforms any tabletop into a miniature backstage. Swing the side panels forward to surround yourself in reflective warmth; fold them back to reveal an intricately pierced ranma cloud scroll. Below, three tuck-away compartments line up like theatre wings ready for props—lip rouge, pearl brooch, fragrant sachets.

Commissioned for a coming-of-age celebration on the Izu Peninsula, its lacquer still gleams like fresh lacquerware from Odawara. Subtle brass locks keep treasures secure, while the central stage—your reflection—takes the spotlight.

  • Origin: Izu Peninsula, Japan

Open the wings, and the theatre of self-transformation begins with a single, luminous bow.
