Antique Japanese Mirror Chest — Wood, 1920, Taisho Era (SKU: 25M-387)
Antique Japanese Kyōdai Mirror Chest — Keyaki “Tiger-Stripe” Burl, 1920s, Taishō Era
Morning light catches a ripple of molten wood
Once the pride of a bridal trousseau in rural Niigata, this kyōdai pairs a full-length tilting mirror with a compact four-drawer kodansu base. The dramatic tora-moku (tiger-stripe) keyaki grain blazes beneath a warm persimmon lacquer, giving the illusion of flowing silk. Dressing for the day becomes an intimate tea ceremony: open the tiny drawer for hairpins, lift the mirror to greet the rising sun, and feel generations of careful hands guiding your own.
Keyaki’s legendary toughness protected farmhouses from fire; here, the same wood guards your heirlooms with quiet strength. Original iron pulls, delicately aged, add understated wabi-sabi charm without stealing the spotlight from the swirling figuring.
